‘Jeopardy Masters’: Northwest player faces stiff competition as tournament continues

The six super-smart players competing in the 2024 “Jeopardy Masters” tournament met again for a pair of games on Monday, May 6. This time, Vancouver’s Yogesh Raut faced off against Victoria Groce and Amy Schneider for the second game in the episode.

That combination saw Raut and Groce, who both won in their first appearances in “Jeopardy Masters,” competing against each other. The third player in their round, Amy Schneider, also competed against Raut in the previous episode, though Schneider finished third in that game, behind Raut and James Holzhauer, who came in second.

The “Jeopardy Masters” format features six contestants, who compete in a series of hour-long episodes, which include two games, with three masters competing in each game. The winner of each game scores three points; the second-place finisher earns one point; and the third-place player gets zero points.

Monday’s installment began with Game 3, which saw Holzhauer, described as the “final boss” of “Jeopardy!,” playing against Mattea Roach, a writer and podcast host from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Matt Amodio, a quantitative researcher from New York.

It was an entertaining game, with Amodio doing well, and Holzhauer securing the lead, thanks in part to “Daily Double” wins. When “Final Jeopardy” arrived, Holzhauer was in first place, with 45,200; Amodio was in second, with 19,200; and Roach was in third, with 5,600.

The category was “20th Century Leaders,” and the clue was: “One of the ‘Big Four’ at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference and a former journalist, he’d supported the Impressionists and Alfred Dreyfus.”

All three players had the correct response, guessing, “Who is (Georges) Clemenceau?” Roach bet 158, bringing their total to 5,758; Amodio bet zero, leaving his total at 19,200; and Holzhauer wagered 908, raising his total to a whopping 46,108.

That left Holzhauer with three points for the win; Amodio with one point for placing second; and Roach with zero, for a third-place finish.

The three players who accumulate the most match points over the three-week “Jeopardy Masters” tournament will advance to the finals. The ultimate winner of “Jeopardy Masters” will take home a grand prize of $500,000.

Game 4 came up next. Raut, a cognitive and behavioral scientist who won the 2024 “Jeopardy!” Tournament of Champions and the $250,000 grand prize, competed against Groce, a writer and television personality from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Schneider, a writer from Oakland, California.

Groce again showed her strength as a player, and she also got a boost from “Daily Double” wins. When it was time for “Final Jeopardy,” Groce was in the lead, with 41,000; Raut was in second, with 11,800; and Schneider was in third, with 10,200.

The “Final Jeopardy” category was “20th Century Writers,” and the clue was: “Becoming British subject in 1927, he described himself as a classicist in literature, Royalist in politics and Anglo-Catholic in religion.”

Schneider had the correct answer with, “Who is T.S. Eliot?” She wagered 1,601, raising her total to 11,801. Raut also had the right answer, and his wager of 8,601 raised his total to 20,401. Groce had an incorrect response, guessing “Who is Tolkien?” Groce wagered 9,000, which dropped her total to 32,000, but that was still enough to secure a win for Groce.

The “Jeopardy Masters” leaderboard, as of Monday’s results, shows Groce at the top, with her two 3-point wins; Holzhauer is in second, with 4 points; Raut is in third, also with 4 points (Holzhauer is ahead of Raut because of a tiebreaker rule, which takes into account the number of correct answers a contestant offers); Amodio is in fourth place, with one match point; Roach is in fifth place, with zero points; and Schneider is in sixth place, also with zero points.
