Fans outraged over WNBA officiating in Caitlyn Clark’s playoff game
WNBA fans were furious over what they saw as poor officiating in game two of the playoff series between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun. Many claimed Caitlyn Clark was the victim of several missed fouls, leaving them baffled by the referee’s decisions.
Just over three minutes into the first quarter of the Fever’s 88-81 loss, Clark pulled up for a deep three-pointer from near half-court while being guarded by DeWanna Bonner. She lost her balance after a clear collision with the Sun veteran, who was attempting to block the shot. Despite the contact, no foul was called.
Clark, visibly frustrated, sprinted to a referee to plead her case, but her complaints were ignored. Later in the game, Clark caught an inbound pass and raced down the court with Sun guard Veronica Burton close behind. As Clark drove toward the basket, Marine Johannes went up to block her layup attempt but instead hit her in the face.
The ESPN broadcast team was stunned after seeing the replay, with one announcer exclaiming, “That’s a foul!” The other added, “And it wasn’t called.”
Fans took to social media, echoing the broadcaster’s disbelief. Many criticized the referees for missing what seemed to be blatant fouls. One of the most heated reactions came from Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who tweeted, “That’s the most automatic call in the league. How do you miss this?” He later added, “These refs are literally blind. It’s disgusting. We keep wasting challenges on fake fouls,” sharing a clip of the missed foul on Clark’s layup. Portnoy didn’t hold back, calling it “absolutely outrageous and disgusting.”
Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith was also at a loss, very frustrated with the refs and the WNBA for making ridiculous decisions during the Fever game.
The lack of calls against Clark throughout the game has raised questions about the consistency and fairness of WNBA officiating, with many fans and analysts demanding answers.
