“This is the coolest part of what I get to do. Being able to give back to a place that has given me so much. Obviously, the Des Moines area, West Des Moines area, has meant a lot to me. So to be able to use my resources and my platform to be able to give back to kids and families that have been an integral part of my life is really cool for me. It makes me smile in return. For me, I’m just myself. That’s what I try to be. I try to just be a great role model for them, and I think it speaks to how I was raised as a kid. I’ve loved every second of playing sports, but my parents always preached there’s so much more to life than just sports. Understanding that, I think, really resonates with young kids. Also, just giving them something to smile about, taking a second out of my day to give them a high five, sign their shoe, sign their poster, whatever it is. I think that can mean the world to them and change their life. Because that’s what it was for me growing up, whether it was an athlete I wanted to be or was inspired by, I feel like they impact me just as much as I impact them. For me, that’s what’s special. Life is short, and these kids, these moments that they get to spend with people they idolize or their heroes or whoever it is, it doesn’t always have to be an athlete. It can be whoever it is in their life, whether that’s a teacher, whether that’s a coach. For me, I had many of those. I think it just reminds you that, yes, the sport is competitive, but also there’s just so much more to life. At the end of the day, you have a bad game, you have a bad loss, it really is not going to affect how these kids react to you. They don’t care that I scored three points. They’re just happy there to watch, smile, and cheer for you.”
