General Hospital (GH) spoilers note Sonny Corinthos has been a staple in the land of Port Charles now for decades. Actor Maurice Benard originated the mob boss role and has become a fan favorite over the years.

Still, there’s been a buzz online as of late that Maurice is planning on exiting the soap, which has concerned some daytime drama viewers.

Benard has talked about exiting his GH role in the past. During a State of Mind podcast episode in April 2022, he stated he was happy about his Sonny Corinthos character.

Still, he confessed that he did have challenges, noting, “Acting isn’t what it was when I was young. Sometimes it’s difficult, and it hits me in places … that I don’t like, like ugh.”

In addition, late last year, a social media troll told Benard that he should retire, on Facebook. Maurice replied with, “Be careful what you wish for.”

The silver lining to all the rumors is that it appears as if Benard is not leaving the soap, anytime soon. After all, there’s been no announcement in this regard from either the show or the actor.

Benard has mentioned that if he did leave GH, he’d focus on his State of Mind podcast, full-time. He explains, “There’s less pressure here for me, and I can still work with mental health. I don’t know when, but soon enough, I’ll be done with (GH). Sorry. I hate to say that, but it’s the truth.”

Maurice Benard entered the role of Sonny Corinthos in 1993. Before that, he worked on All My Children from 1987 to 1989 playing Nico Kelly.

During his tenure with GH, Benard has earned nine Daytime Emmy nominations in total and has snagged the statuette on three occasions, once in 2003, 2019, and 2021.
