To promote NCIS: Origins, Mark Harmon joins Austin Stowell, the new Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Two years after he left the police procedural, Harmon is set to return to the franchise. This time, however, he will be behind the camera as a narrator and producer. NCIS: Origins will tackle Gibbs’ early days with the agency as part of Mike Franks’ team. Set in the early ’90s, its events will show how the no-nonsense leader of the NCIS Major Case Response Team became who he was.

This is the first time that Harmon and Stowell have been seen together for the project. The event was part of CBS’ Upfronts, which laid out the network’s future programming plans, which includes NCIS: Origins.
Will Mark Harmon Physically Appear In NCIS: Origins?
Harmon doesn’t have to appear regularly, and his cameo does not need to be complicated. NCIS: Origins can start with a shot of Harmon’s Gibbs during his retired days in Alaska.
The role of young Gibbs was recast with Stowell after Harmon’s son, Sean Harmon, previously played the part in the flagship NCIS show. Despite that, he will still be involved in NCIS: Origins as a co-producer like his father. The idea for Harmon’s role in the prequel, however, is inspired by Jim Parsons’ involvement in Young Sheldon, as he provides the voice-over for the events of The Big Bang Theory prequel from old Sheldon’s perspective. It’s uncertain if Harmon will make a physical appearance, but there’s an easy way to do it, especially if it helps draw in more viewers.

This would mark the actor’s first appearance as the character since exiting the show. Harmon was a no-show during Ducky’s tribute episode. Gibbs was also absent during NCIS’ 1000th episode. His return in the premiere can explain why he is recalling the events of his early days with the organization. It could also be a great way to reinforce his involvement in the series.
Regardless of whether Harmon physically appears in NCIS: Origins, expect that he will be heavily involved in promoting the show. As previously revealed by his former NCIS co-star Sean Murray, the actor is keen on making sure to honor Gibbs’ legacy via the prequel. That’s reassuring, especially since a significant part of the character’s story at this point was already revealed during his time in the flagship project.
