Grey’s Anatomy season 20 has a brand-new trailer. The upcoming season will continue the story of the long-running ABC medical drama in the wake of the departure of title character Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), though she will make an appearance in at least one upcoming episode. In the wake of the 2023 strikes in which writers and then actors took to the picket lines to fight for fair pay, the new season will have a shortened order of 10 episodes.
ABC has now unveiled a new full-length trailer for Grey’s Anatomy season 20. Check it out below:
The trailer offers a closer look at Meredith Grey’s return, which will give her the opportunity to look back on her own days as an intern as she helps guide the senior staff’s treatment of the newcomers at the hospital. It also showcases the return of Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), who was part of the main cast between seasons 6 and 14 and hasn’t appeared on the show since season 14 ended in 2018.
Meredith & Arizona’s Grey’s Anatomy Exits Explained
Having been on the show so long, Arizona was part of many of its biggest storylines, especially when it came to her relationship with Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez), with whom she got married and then divorced after losing her leg in an airplane accident. Jessica Capshaw’s Grey’s Anatomy exit came about when she and Sarah Drew were fired due to creative differences. However, onscreen, Arizona decided to move to New York so her daughter Sofia could be close to both her parents.
Meredith’s return comes after a much shorter period, but it is no less important. Meredith departed the show in season 19, episode 7, when she moved across the country so her gifted daughter could go to the right school. Pompeo stayed on as an executive producer and the show’s narrator, but her departure will allow her to pursue other projects aside from Grey’s after nearly two decades of playing almost no other roles other than the iconic Meredith Grey.
Pompeo’s swift return to Grey’s Anatomy is something of an onscreen acknowledgment that her departure from the show was amicable. By returning, she is giving her blessing to the other characters to continue keeping the show going strong and highlighting the fact that the show won’t ever forget Meredith and her legacy. Arizona’s return is the cherry on top of this season of big comebacks, honoring the show’s history even further.
