In the latest season of Before the 90 Days, we’ve already been introduced to a few characters that make us wonder, “Where do they find these people?” One of them is Renee, who introduces herself as a 37-year-old from Española, New Mexico. However, she spells her name “Rayne,” which she insists is pronounced as “Renee,” despite the unusual spelling. She lives on a farm with 135 chickens and two kids whose names, unlike hers, are spelled exactly as they sound.
Renee’s story follows her five-year online relationship with a Nigerian man named Chitty, who is blind. His blindness came as a result of two separate accidents, and his faith played a crucial role in helping him cope with his disability. Though they initially bonded over their shared interests, their relationship seems to have a few red flags. One of the more concerning aspects is how Renee almost romanticizes Chitty’s blindness, suggesting that she likes him more because he can’t see her—implying her own insecurities about her appearance.
Chitty is religious and has vowed to wait until marriage before sharing a bed with someone, a belief that contrasts with some of Renee’s expectations. This difference in values is one of many red flags that hint at trouble in their relationship. In addition to differences in faith, Renee holds some unconventional beliefs, such as believing in aliens and the Illuminati, which Chitty doesn’t seem to agree with.
A particularly alarming moment comes when Chitty recalls a discussion where Renee asked if he was “ready to be sacrificed” and prepared to be in a room with vampires and cannibals. Renee later explained that she was referring to the “sacrifice” of moving to the U.S., but this doesn’t seem to sit well with Chitty, who appears uneasy about some of their differences.
As the couple finally meets in person, tensions rise. Renee seems to struggle with the fact that Chitty doesn’t immediately agree to share a bed with her, citing his religious beliefs. Her frustration becomes evident, and previews for future episodes suggest that her anger may be a recurring issue, especially when she doesn’t get her way.
In the next episodes, it appears that Renee’s temper will flare up even more, including an incident where she threatens to “become really violent” if they kill a chicken for food. Her relationship with Chitty’s family also looks like it will be another source of conflict, as we see hints of her clashing with them and threatening to leave.
